Lafayette Electronic Arts Festival presents LEAFlet [26.4] – Maria Chavez: abstract turntablism workshop and performance
Saturday, May 16
FREE Workshop @ The Collective Community Arts Center, 201 N. Public Road, 1PM
Live Performance @ Confluence , 75 Waneka Pkwy, Lafayette, 7PM

Born in Lima, Peru and based in NYC, Maria Chávez is best known as an abstract turntablist, sound artist, and DJ. Join us for a Hands-On Abstract Turntablism workshop, explore using turntables and vinyl records as an instrument.
All materials will be provided, although you are encouraged to bring your own vinyl – but keep in mind that this workshop is all about using vinyl records as highly manipulable objects – scratching, breaking and otherwise altering them, so don’t bring anything precious!
Afterwards, experience a live performance with Maria at Confluence. Maria is the only abstract turntablist in the world who performs with a rare needle known as the RAKE Double Needle. This special device contains two needles on one head, allowing it to read two different segments of a single record at the same time. Paired with her inimitable ability to create unforgettable sonic experiences from shards of broken records, each performance is truly unique.
