LEAF2025 L’astra Cosmo

L’Astra Cosmo presents “Lightphorms”

Colorado-based music artists L’Astra Cosmo return to LEAF to present a brand new audiovisual live show. Lightphorms is an electrified exploration into the secret world of phosphorescent visual forms that are generated using sound and voltage-controlled analog signals that are captured from vintage oscillographic CRT displays and modified vector game displays from the early 1980’s.

The new work incorporates elements of vector and video synthesis with themes of retrofuturism and early analog computer animation techniques in hyper-chromatic visual form. In essence, Lightphorms explores the direct relationship between sound and light combined with artificial depth perception by exploiting a visual illusion known as chromostereopsis that can be enhanced and observed through ChromaDepth™ 3D glasses which will take audiences to new heights of synesthesia.

Important note: Portions of the performance will exhibit moments of stroboscopic light, therefore audience members who are sensitive to flashing light should take this into consideration.

Stenflo and Jantz were actively responsible for spearheading and producing several showcases featuring international talent with the likes of Yann Novack, NoiseFold, Atom™, Tobias Freund, Monolake/Robert Henke, Andy Stott, Demdike Stare, Claro Intelecto, Thomas Fehlmann, Gudrun Gut, Pole, Pulshar, Mike Huckaby, Deepchord presents Echospace, Clinker, Shawn Rudiman, Titonton Duvanté, Mysteries of the Deep and many more.

Later adding and continually developing the visual aspect of their own work, Stenflo and Jantz decided to move their audiovisual-focused projects under the name “L’Astra Cosmo”. The first appearance as “L’Astra Cosmo” was on August 6, 2016 at a clandestine annual outdoor event they co-curated and produced known as Lunar Lodge. This was followed by their live performance of “Frequencies Unseen” premiered at the Lafayette Electronic Arts Festival in October, 2016. In 2023, they were invited to do a residency for Signal Culture and produced work using the Jones Colorizer and Raster Manipulator and the Nam June Paik-designed “Wobbulator”. For the 2024 edition of LEAF, Stenflo and Jantz co-presented, produced and performed live visuals for Laraaji’s musical performance.
